Walking: Crauchie is set amidst fields and woods and there are extensive off-road walks direct from the door-step. The Scottish National Museum of Flight (home to Concorde) is ten minutes’ walk away and the farm tracks link up to the John Muir Way, which follows the beautiful East Lothian coastline.
Golf: East Lothian is a golfer’s paradise and Crauchie is within 20 minutes drive of nearly a score of golf courses, including Muirfield, Gullane, Luffness and North Berwick, so golfers will find no shortage of challenges. Ian plays himself and is happy to help with information and booking tees. Golf clubs and equipment can be safely housed.
Attractions: Apart from our picturesque local village of East Linton, we are roughly equidistant from Dunbar and North Berwick with their busy little harbours and Haddington with its ancient church and 18 th century town square. Tantallon Castle dominates the nearby coast and commands views of Bass Rock and its remarkable gannet colony, Dirleton Castle has a beautiful garden below its ancient walls and Hailes Castle boasts close links with Mary Queen of Scots.
The beaches of Yellowcraig, Gullane and Tynninghame are stunning stretches of golden sand. There is a famous and extensive bird sanctuary at Aberlady Bay. The award-winning Scottish Seabird Centre at North Berwick attracts visitors from worldwide and boats make regular sightseeing trips around the offshore gannet, puffin and seal colonies.
We are near to various popular wedding venues such as the stately houses of Lennoxlove, Gilmerton and Broxmouth, as well as Fenton Tower and Ravensheugh Log Cabin. There is a good local taxi service and transport can be arranged.
Location: Crauchie lies a few miles north of the A1 trunk road between Haddington and Dunbar. It is also easily accessible by bus to East Linton or train to Drem station. Edinburgh airport is only 33 miles away.
By car: Off the A1 from the NORTH take the 2nd Haddington exit (Abbotsview) and follow signs to East Linton. From the SOUTH follow signs to East Linton on the A199 at the Thistly Cross roundabout, which is the 2nd roundabout giving access to Dunbar. In East Linton turn left (from the north) or right (from the south) at the overhead railway bridge into Bridge Street. Go straight on through the village and up the hill at the other side. At the top turn left towards Markle, cross the railway at the level crossing and 500 yards on the left look out for a sign for Crauchie in the hedge. The red gravel road opposite is half a mile long and Crauchie Farmhouse is at the top on the left. Park in the drive.
By air: to Edinburgh airport. Buses operate into Edinburgh city centre every 15 minutes, terminating at Waverley station. Then take the North Berwick train, alighting at Drem station (as below). Private pilots flying into East Fortune Airfield can be met.
By train: Mainline train to Edinburgh Waverley. Change to the local North Berwick train and alight at Drem station, the 5 th stop on the line. Guests can be met.
By Bus: From St Andrews Bus Station take the X6 or X8 bus to Haddington or East Linton (journey time 50 mins to 1 hour). Guests can be met.
